Spring Term One 2019

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break and lots of lovely family time. Hopefully you are all well rested for a very exciting start to 2019!

Over the holidays lots of lovely things have been planned for our Year 2 children in Blackbirds. Our topic is called ‘Wonderland’ which will lead us to the exciting story of Alice in Wonderland. The children will develop their language skills through the mysterious characters and adventures, producing their very own magical story. The weeks leading up to our residential trip to Tatton Hall the children will learn about recounts and the skills needed for this genre of writing. For more details about the learning in each subject please look at the curriculum learning grid below.

Remember the dates for Blackbirds Residential is Tuesday 12th February- Wednesday 13th February. There will be a time for the children to showcase their learning from their stay, so keep an eye out for more details.

As always thank you for your continued support.

Please don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions.

I hope you have had a restful break and are ready for a busy fun packed half term.

For the first week back the children will learn about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder plot. We will then move onto our main topic ‘We Will Remember’, here the children will discover how World War one started and what special act happened on Christmas Day in 1914. Look below at our topic web for more details.

This then leads us nicely into our last narrative ‘The Three Wise Women’ with the run up to Christmas! Lots of lovely things are planned around this time so keep an eye out! Especially the dates for our Christmas nativity.

As always thank you for your continued support.

Please don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions or queries.

Autumn Term One

Welcome back!

I hope you have all had a wonderful Summer break and are ready and rested for Year 2.

Meanwhile, lots of things have been happening behind the scenes at school to ensure that another fantastic year of learning, excitement and new experiences await the children.

Our history centred topic for this half term is the Great Fire of London. However, we will start the term by looking at 'twisted' fairy tales in English as part of a whole school writing project. Look out for the results of this in our entrance hall as the term progresses. Blackbirds will be looking at the story of The Three Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, a different slant on the traditional tale of the Three Little Pigs. From this the children will be retelling the story and then writing instructions. Our science focus of materials will link in with the text and also the 1666 houses of London.

To keep up to date with what is happening in class, make sure you regularly check our school Twitter feed.

Please try to read as often as possible at home, ideally at least 5 times a week, as it really makes such a difference to your child's development. Talk about the book to build comprehension skills and record it in the reading diary.

Please ensure that your child brings their reading book and diary to school every day.

I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming meet the teacher evening on 11th September. It is vitally important that this session is attended as homework, use of reading diaries, curriculum and school routines will be detailed. Should you have any other queries please feel free to email me using the address at the top of the page or speak to me in person at the end of the school day.

Here's to an exciting year in Blackbirds!
