Puffins - Year 5 2018-2019
Summer Term Curriculum Learning - Intrepid Explorers
Welcome back, I hope that you have had a restful break and are ready for another exciting term ahead to finish the year.
This term, the children in puffins class will be studying Central America, with a particular focus on the Mayan civilisation who inhabitated Mesoamerica. There will be a particular focus on:
- Mayan timelines
- Geographical location of Mesoamerica
- Topography of Mesoamerica (human and physical features)
- River fous
- Mayan Gods
- Life of a Mayan child and village life
In our English lessons, the children will be looking at the book 'The Errand' by Leo Lafleur.
'You can't remember how you became the errand boy of a suspected witch...you can only remember being desperate.'
In this fable-like graphic novel, a young boy hurries to deliver a package - to an ununusual terrifying woman who lives deep within the sinister Whispering Woods. On the way, he must face his fears in the darkness of the forest. He passes the mystical wolves of the deep caves, slips by murderous spiders, feels the shaking of the giant as it snores, and even encounters a glimmer of hope...but what awaits him at the woman's hut?
We will write poetry inspired by the book and also plan and write our own fictional stories based on 'The Errand.'
To keep up to date with what is happening in our class, make sure you regularly check our school's Twitter and Facebook feeds as well as our class blog.
