Puffins - Year 5 2018-2019
Autumn Term 2018 - Anglo Saxons and Scots
Welcome back, I hope you have had a wonderful summer and are ready to start another action packed year!
Our history centered topic for this half term will focus on the the Anglo Saxons and Scots and their struggle living alongside one another. However, we will start the term by looking at 'twisted' fairy tales in English as part of a whole school writing project. In Puffins class, we will be looking at 'The Sleeper and the Spindle' by Neil Gaimon a fairy tale that subverts the genre between Sleeping beauty and Snow white. From this, children will be writing diary extracts and focusing on building tension and suspense in their writing leading to them creating a prequel/sequel of the story.
The children will then move on to writing in a number of genres to demonstrate their historical knowledge based on the Anglo Saxons and Scots focusing on 'Beowulf'. This topic will change to Anglo Saxons and Vikings during the second part of the Autumn term and a particular focus on the struggle for the crown of England. To keep up to date with what is happening in class, make sure you regularly check our school Twitter feed.
I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming meet the teacher evening. It is vitally important that this session is attended as homework, use of reading diaries, curriculum and school routines will be detailed. Should you have any other queries please feel free to email me using the address at the top of the page or speak to me in person at the end of the school day.
