Puffins - Year 5 2018-2019
Spring Term Curriculum Learning - Awe-Inspiring Americas
Welcome back, I hope that you have had a restful Christmas break and are ready for another exciting term ahead.
This term, the children in puffins class will be studying North, South and Central America focusing on the physical and human Geography of these magnificent continents. There will be a particular focus on:
- Continent, country and city names
- Longitude and latitude/Climate Zones/Biomes
- Weather and Climate variations
- Comparing similarities and differences between regions
- Focus on North America
- Human and Physical features of the Americas
In our English lessons, the children will be learning to write a recount based on the book 'The man who walked between the towers' by Mordicai Gerstein. The story is based on the true story of the tightrope walker Phillipe Petit from France who orchestrated a secret night-time tightrope walk between the twin towers in New York city in 1974. Following their recount work, the children will use their knowledge of the event to write a newspaper report about Phillipe Petit and his tightrope acrobabtics above the city. Finally, the children will write poetry inspired by Pie Corbett's 'Midnight City.'
