Spring Term 2021

Curriculum learning - Spring Term 1

Happy New Year and Welcome to 2021. We hope that you had a peaceful and restful Christmas break, and  look forward to welcoming the children into school on Tuesday.

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to be a great detective; to unpick the threads of mystery and solve a crime?

Our text this half term, ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ by Arthur Conan Doyle, will transport us back to the world of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. Using the text as a stimulus, the children will plan and write a Cliffhanger narrative and a Formal Event report.

During shared reading, we will focus on a variety of non-fiction and fiction texts which will provide an insight into Victorian life.

P.E. continues to take place on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon. Monday is an outdoor  session focusing upon ball skills and strategies in Tag rugby. Warm outdoor clothing, such as hoodies and jogging trousers, and appropriate footwear are essential. Football boots or trainers with a good grip are recommended for the playing field.

In history we will be looking at the Viking invasion of Britain, determining the reasons for it and the impact it had on our country.

Reading, spelling and maths homework will continue to be set each Friday and should be completed by the following Wednesday.

Curriculum Learning -  Autumn 1

Welcome to Puffins. We hope that you had a good summer break and are ready for the busy term ahead.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk on the Moon?

Our inspirational text, ‘Where Once We Stood,’ by Christopher Riley tells the stories of the Apollo astronauts who walked on the moon. Each mission is retold using the actual conversation that took place between the astronauts on the lunar surface. Using the text as a stimulus, the children will plan and write an explanation narrative and a formal report to recount the events of the Apollo missions.

In history this half term, the children will explore the world of the Anglo-Saxons and why they came to Britain. They will consider the question ‘Was the Anglo-Saxon period really a Dark Age?’

As we have had so much rain during the last week, we shall begin our science by learning about the Water Cycle. The children will carry out some exciting experiments and attempt to create their own mini water cycle in the classroom! We shall follow this with a study of Forces and Gravity, which will develop the children’s scientific understanding of the world around them.

Reading, Spelling and Maths homework will be set each Friday, and is due in the following Wednesday.

Year 5 will have two pieces of homework to complete online. Year 6 will have one piece of homework to complete online, and one in their homework book.

To keep up to date with what’s happening in Puffins, please check the school Twitter feed regularly.

Should you have any queries, please feel free to contact us on the email addresses at the top of the page.

We recognise that things maybe a little different at the start of term, but this is an exciting time for Puffins as we grow together as a class.

Kind Regards

Mrs Hall and Mrs Ward
