Skylarks - Year 2 2019 - 2020
Spring Term - Into the Woods
Welcome back following the Christmas break and a huge thank you from the Skylarks staff team for all the kind gifts and cards we received. We would like to wish you all a happy new year and we look forward to working with you again over the spring term.
Skylarks theme for the spring term is ‘Into the Forest’, which has a geographical drive and we look forward to our Tattenhall residential as a key part of this experience. The children have a fun term to look forward to with exciting activities related to the theme along side producing art work for Northwich Schools and our whole school aspirations week.
We will be exploring the story ‘Bog Baby’ by Jeanne Willis as a key text and writing recounts linked to our residential. We will develop our history and geography skills through a study of the local area and in particular Delamere Forest.
Children will read and discuss books in a group guided reading session once a week as well as an additional individual reading time with the teacher or teaching assistant. The children will also engage in shared reading experiences on a daily basis. Your child's reading diary will be sent home with your child every day. It is vital that books and book bags are brought in daily to ensure we can make the most of any reading opportunities beyond planned sessions. At home please do not feel the need to complete any book in one session but do take time to discuss the book to develop comprehension skills.
The children are regularly assessed and work within a group appropriate to their phonic phase. The children receive their spellings on a Friday and are assessed through dictated sentences except in cases of timetable changes or trips and visits. Please encourage your child to write key spellings within sentences to apply them if you feel they pick them up quickly on a word by word basis.
We hope that this information is of help. If you have any worries, concerns or questions please do not hesitate to come in and see us.
Autumn Term 2 - Remembrance
Autumn Term 1 - Explorers
Welcome to Skylarks class. We hope that you have all had a lovely summer and are looking forward to an exciting time in Year 2.
Our focus book for this half term will be ' A River' by Marc Martin. This will allow us to explore a variety of landscapes through a river journey. The children will plan and write circular stories, letters and poetry inspired by the text. Phonics will continue to be taught on a daily basis.
History and geography will focus around the question 'How have explorers changed the world?' and we will be looking in particular at the explorer Osa Johnson. We have 2 exciting visits planned - the first to Cheshire Wildlife Trust and later we will be visiting Chester Zoo. Further details will be shared with you nearer the time.
Maths and spelling/phonics homework will be set electronically on a Friday and should be completed by the following Wednesday. Thank you for supporting your child with this. Please continue to read with your child at every possible opportunity, remembering to ask them what and why questions to help develop comprehension skills.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the 'Meet the Teacher' evening on Wednesday 4th September (3.30 - 4.00pm) where we will be discussing information such as homework, PE kit, curriculum and school routines.
To keep up to date with what is happening in class on a weekly basis, make sure you regularly check our school Twitter feed and look out for new blogs.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us, either by email or at the end of the day.
