Our Learning in Autumn 1

Reading

As Readers in Year 3, children read a range of high-quality texts, including  Leon and the place between by Graheme Baker Smith, King of the Cloud Forests by Michael Morpurgo and Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carrroll. They develop confidence, discussing characters, themes and events while justifying their ideas using evidence from the text.

Reading is closely linked to the wider curriculum. Children explore non-fiction texts about Science, living things and historical events and read myths, legends and poetry. This breadth of reading supports children in becoming enthusiastic, thoughtful and skilled readers.

Writing

As Writers in Year 3, children write for a range of purposes inspired by rich texts including The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, The Rhythm of the Rain by Graham Baker-Smith, Star bird by Sharon King Chai and Egyptology by Dugald Steer. They write narratives, a newspaper report, create information leaflets, and present factual information clearly for a desired audience.

There is a strong focus on clear, engaging and well-structured writing. Pupils develop drafting and editing skills, take pride in presenting their work neatly in pen, and are taught handwriting and spelling explicitly, including the Year 3/4 statutory word list.

Mathematics

As Mathematicians in Year 3, children work with numbers up to 1,000 using the First 4 Maths programme, developing secure place value understanding and confidence with written and mental calculation methods. They will begin to learn about  Roman numerals and begin to write the date and year in Roman numerals; progress to developing their understanding of place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They will explore fractions, measure, money, time, shape, angles and statistics. Children will apply their knowledge through problem-solving and reasoning, developing fluency, mathematical vocabulary, confidence and the ability to explain their thinking

Across all areas, pupils are encouraged to explain their reasoning, solve problems systematically and approach maths with confidence and resilience.

Create Learning Trust

In education, teachers often talk about the moment when something 'clicks' for a child - when a concept is grasped, imagination sparked, or idea formed.
Create Learning Trust, a network of academies in Northwich, Cheshire, is committed to giving children and young people those moments. We embrace innovation, share best practice, and shape opportunities to create an environment that inspires both staff and students.
