Reading
Reception is the spring board for everything! We want to begin that love for reading therefore, our children in Reception focus on learning to read with confidence through daily phonics teaching. This is by using the Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) programme, where they learn Phase 1, 2 , 3 and 4 sounds to support accurate blending, segmenting and fluency. Your child's reading book is changed every week to replicate the sounds taught that week. Please continue to read with your child daily for 5-10 minutes as this is essential in supporting their fluency, comprehension and love of reading. Whilst reading with your child try to discuss the books too: what has happened so far, what they think may happen next, who are their favourite characters…
Writing
In Reception our writing lessons are taught through 'Drawing Club'. Drawing Club is a true adventure and perfect for our youngest children. Based around the Golden Blend of picture books, tales and animations, it involves a short period of Time Together as a whole class followed by time with children exploring their ideas and creativity that can be adapted how we believe is best. Your child will be inspired to draw their own pictures and codes! Please see our overview for the list of focus for Spring 2.
Mathematics
In Reception, we want to build strong early maths skills which give our children confidence and a love of numbers! Our Maths lessons are practical, fun and meaningful. Sessions are taught in short, focused bursts with a balance of teacher-led learning and play-based activities. Children use a wide range of manipulatives such as counters, cubes, tens frames and number lines to explore ideas and new concepts hands‑on.
Please keep in touch and look out for class updates, timetables, and all our special learning highlights on our Class Dojo page.
Could you also ensure that children bring their water bottle, containing still water, to school each day.
P.E kits are left in school and will come home at the end of this half term to be washed.
Please feel free to ask us any questions you might have. Mrs Larbey will teach the children Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and Mrs Ducker Thursday and Friday. Mrs Jennings is with our children everyday.
