Puffins Year 5 2025 - 2026

Curriculum learning Spring 2
Welcome to Puffins class page. Here, parents will be able to see an overview of the learning that is planned for the term ahead.
Reading
As Readers in Year 5, children read a range of high-quality texts, including Sky Song by Abi Elphinstone, Outlaw by Michael Morpurgo and Journey to Jo’burg by Beverly Naidoo. They develop fluency, comprehension and confidence, discussing characters, themes and events while justifying their ideas using evidence from the text.
Reading is closely linked to the wider curriculum. Children explore non-fiction texts about habitats, living things and animals, and read myths, legends and poetry. This breadth of reading supports children in becoming enthusiastic, thoughtful and skilled readers.
Writing
As Writers in Year 5, children write for a range of purposes inspired by rich texts including When we walked on the Moon by David Long and Sam Kalda, FArTher by Graham Baker-Smith, The Errand by Leo LaFleur and Kong by Anthony Browne, alongside a whole-school Shakespeare project based on Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. They write narratives, a newspaper report, a Cliffhanger narrative, diary entries and an instruction manual.
There is a strong focus on clear, engaging and well-structured writing. Pupils develop drafting and editing skills, take pride in presenting their work neatly in pen, and are taught handwriting and spelling explicitly, including the Year 5/6 statutory word list.
Mathematics
As Mathematicians in Year 5, children work with numbers up to 1,000,000 using the First 4 Maths programme, developing secure place value understanding and confidence with written and mental calculation methods. They continue to build on their knowledge of Roman numerals up to 1,000 and begin to write years in Roman numerals; progress to identifying prime, square and cube numbers; enhance their skills in multiplying digits up to four digits by two-digit numbers and dividing larger numbers with remainders; and deepen their understanding of fractions, including equivalent fractions, mixed and improper fractions alongside fractions, decimal, percentage conversions.
Across all areas, pupils are encouraged to explain their reasoning, solve problems systematically and approach maths with confidence and resilience.
