Sparrows Year 1 2022 - 2023
Mrs Hall
Welcome to Sparrows' class page
I hope you have all had a lovely Easter break and that you've managed to enjoy some time outside in the sunshine.
It's difficult to believe that we are now about to begin our Summer term, but as usual we have lots of exciting things to look forward to. As well as our new learning we also have the phonic screening check, Sports day, our Platinum celebration and a Coronation.
Please find below an overview of our learning for the coming half term.
We will be focusing our attention on the great outdoors, looking at the plants and animals around us and also growing a variety of flowers, fruits and vegatables to enhance our outdoor area.
Please ensure that all PE kits, and sweatshirts, are named so that they return to their rightful owners. Could you also ensure that as the weather warms up children bring their water bottle to school each day.
Please continue to check our Twitter account to keep up to date with our activities.
As always, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Spring 2 learning.
Welcome back. I hope you have had a good half term break and managed to enjoy the sunshine and dry weather. Please find below an overview of our learning for the second half of the Spring term.
Spring 1 Learning.
Happy New Year! I hope you have had a lovely break and managed to spend time with family and friends.
Please find below an overview of our learning for the coming half term.
Our topic this half term will focus on Explorers and we will look at the conditions needed to survive in polar regions.
In phonics we will continue to learn Phase 5 alternate sounds and apply them in our reading and writing. Please ensure that you read regularly with your child and make a note in their reading diary. As previously, your child will have a new reading book each Friday, matched to the phonics they are learning, which should be read several times during the week in order to develop fluency.
We will continue to teach PE each Wednesday and Thursday so could you please ensure that correct PE kits are sent into school on a Monday and remain in school for the week. Shorts and t-shirt are required for indoor lessons but we will venture outside so jogging bottoms and a hoodie would help to keep your child warm during these lessons.
Could you also ensure that your child brings a warm coat and their water bottle (filled with still water) each day.
Wearing slippers in school has made such a difference to our environment so we will be continuing to wear them this term too.
As always, if you have any concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.

Autumn 2 learning
Welcome back. I hope you have had a good half term break and are ready for another busy term.
We will continue to teach phonics daily, concentrating on Phase 5 whilst recapping earlier phases.
Homework will be set on a Friday and will be due the following Wednesday. This will be one piece of Maths and Phonics/ English per week. Please also ensure that you continue to read with your child daily for 5-10 minutes as this is essential in supporting their fluency, comprehension and love of reading.
We are fortunate that this half term we have an expert cricket coach working with our class so could you please ensure that PE kit is brought into school each Monday moening and we will send it home on Friday to be washed. As it starts to get colder, it is advisable that the children bring jogging bottoms and a warm zip up hoodie / jumper for when we go outside for P.E. plus their usual blue shorts and white t-shirt for indoor lessons. Please ensure that all PE kits, and sweatshirts, are named so that they return to their rightful owners. Could you also ensure that children bring their water bottle to school each day.
Please continue to check our Twitter account to keep up to date with our activities.
As always, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Autumn 1 Learning
I hope you have all had a lovely summer break and are excited to be moving into Year 1. I’m so looking forward to the adventures that we will have together over the coming months.
In Sparrows team this year we will have Mrs Hall plus Mrs Burrows who will be working with us each morning. Mrs Austin and Mrs Harvey will also be joining us on a Monday afternoon.
Phonics will be taught daily in Year 1. We will continue to recap Phase 3 digraphs and Phase 4 blends whilst also moving on to teaching Phase 5 phonics.
Homework will be set on a Friday and will be due the following Wednesday. This will all be online and will be one piece of Maths and Phonics per week. Please also ensure that you continue to read with your child daily for 5-10 minutes as this is essential in supporting their fluency, comprehension and love of reading.
P.E will be taught twice a week, on Wednesday and Thursday. Please make sure that your child has the correct kit and trainers for these sessions. As it starts to get colder, it is advisable that the children bring jogging bottoms, a warm zip up hoodie / jumper, a hat and gloves for when we go outside for P.E. plus their usual blue shorts and white t-shirt for indoor lessons. P.E kits will be sent home each Friday to be washed and returned on the following Monday. Please ensure that all PE kits, and sweatshirts, are named so that they return to their rightful owners. Could you also ensure that children bring their water bottle to school each day.
We are lucky to once again have an outside space that is solely for our use. In order to make the most of this space we would like all children to have their own waterproofs and wellies in school. This will mean that regardless of the weather they will be able to enjoy time outside. Please provide your child with a pair of waterproof overalls or trousers and a jacket plus a pair of wellies that can remain in school.
Please continue to check our Twitter account to keep up to date with our activities.
As always, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.
