Toucans - Year 6 2018-2019
Welcome back! I hope you have all had a lovely summer and feel refreshed and ready for your first term in Year 6! It's going to be a busy year and we'll be working very hard in preparation for the SATs tests but there is also lots to look forward to as well.
We are going to kick off the year with a whole school writing project on a 'Twisted Tales' theme. Toucans are going to be looking at a retelling of The Brothers Grimm's greatest, and perhaps darkest, fairy tale - Hansel and Gretel by Neil Gaiman. Along side this, in our shared reading sessions, we'll be exploring texts that show tension and suspense such as The Wizards of Once, A Tale Dark and Grimm and Room 13. We'll be covering a range of genres, including poetry, narrative writing and persuasive writing. This whole school theme will feed into our Art for the half term as well.
In our topic lessons, we'll be going on a fascinating journey of discovery as we find out about the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the kingdom of England. We will explore where the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings came from, how they fought for territory and power, and how their fighting ultimately led to the kingdom of England we know today. This topic will span the whole term, up until Christmas, but our English theme will change after the half term holiday.
I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming 'meet the teacher' evening on the 11th September, where i'll be going through key information, such as homework, reading, daily routines etc and i'll be able to answer any questions you may have.
Keep checking Twitter to keep up to date with what we are covering in class.
Here's to an exciting year ahead at Cuddington!
